History

The development of the school grew with the growth of the Hellenic Community.  Originally Greek, as a language, was taught by members of the community on a part-time basis.  After the completion of the Greek Orthodox Church in 1958, an afternoon Greek School was established with the lessons being held in the neighbouring building, now known as the Sparta Hall.  All grades of Greek were taught up to ‘O’ Level.

In January 1970 a morning school for primary education was established with 17 pupils.  The curriculum and medium was in English taught by English teachers with at least one hour of Greek lessons daily which were taught by Greek teachers assigned by the Greek Government.  This system still exists.

As the number of pupils grew, the classrooms became insufficient.  It eventually became possible for the Hellenic Community to purchase 27 acres bordering the suburb of Alexandra Park along Borrowdale Road.  A core of 3 classroom blocks with facilities for four classrooms in each, was built.

On 18 May 1975, His Beatitude, Patriarch Nikolaos of Alexandria officially opened the new school and laid the Foundation Stone.  The school of 50 children, boys and girls, was for Greek children who were taught the local Government syllabus with daily Greek lessons.  The Afternoon School of many more pupils was attended by children from other schools who wished to pursue their Greek lessons.

In January 1984, the school opened its doors to non-Greek children.  The increase in numbers has seen rapid progress, both in facilities and buildings.  The enthusiasm of the Hellenic Community that saw the small beginnings still prevails today, making it one of the leading primary schools in Harare.
